


If I lost my USB drive that functioned in place of the TPM, I would have a brick on my hands. While the USB drive is an option, it seems like a kludge. Using eDrive in conjunction with BitLocker also makes use of the hardware on the drive, but it also requires a TPM chip, or a USB drive. I just don't want my drive read in the event of theft. For example, my BIOS only allows me an 8-character password on boot. Of course, the limitations of that involve BIOS implementations. That makes the drive ask for the password regardless of where it is plugged into. To make it so you cannot pop the drive out of the machine and just plug it in to another computer and read it, setting a password in the BIOS is sufficient. The SSD, as mentioned elsewhere, already has hardware encryption running on it. I called Samsung and asked about the BIOS password vs.


Just to bring this around full circle and since I could not find a clear answer for this on the web, I will post what I learned here. I just want to secure my data in the event my laptop were lost or stolen. I don't give a shit about the NSA cracking my encryption, or plausible deniablity, or any of that. I've done a good deal of searching and it seems like there is a fair amount of confusion on this topic. I have Windows 8 Pro, but no TPM, so I think BitLocker would need a USB key in order to run properly, unless there is a way to tap into whatever hardware the drive has. Updating to Windows 8.1 took a while since all I have is Windows 8 media. Since I just installed the OS (Windows 8), I would rather not do that, if I didn't have to. Lastly, there's an Encrypted Drive option that may work with BitLocker, although it seems to require that I do a secure erase and reinstall the OS. There's the TCG/OPAL encryption, which seems to be something that requires additional software and probably isn't applicable to me. This locks my machine down, but does it do anything to the drive? If someone were to pull the drive out of my machine, would that BIOS password prevent anyone from just plugging it in to another machine and reading the data? My laptop is a 2011 Dell XPS15 and lacks a TPM chip, unfortunately.Īs I understand it, I can enable a HDD password in the BIOS.
